Jessi: Whose is this? in French
Jessi: In each lesson of this 25 part series, you'll master a common question for French learners, and then learn how to answer it like a native. You'll learn how these key phrases work by breaking them down into each component. Then through repetition and new vocabulary, you'll expand your understanding of the question, its answers, and any variations. You'll also improve pronunciation and fluency by repeating the words and phrases out loud after hearing them.
Jessi: In this lesson, you'll learn how to respond to the common question "Whose is this? " In French, this is
Ingrid: À qui c'est?
The first word in the question “Whose is this? ” is
Ingrid: À
Jessi: meaning something like “to" in English. Listen to it syllable by syllable.
Ingrid: (Slow, by syllable) À
Jessi: Listen again at natural speed. Please repeat.
Ingrid: À
Jessi: This pattern of first introducing a word at natural speed, providing the English translation, breaking it down by syllable, and then giving it once more at natural speed will be repeated throughout the series. Try to speak aloud as often as possible. The next word in the question, Whose is this? is
Ingrid: qui
Jessi: meaning “who".

Jessi: which is the contracted version of the word for “it”. Listen to it syllable by syllable.

Jessi: meaning “is”.

Jessi: To make another phrase, replace my father with my mother.

Jessi: Listen to the phrase again, this time with my mother
Ingrid: C'est à ma mère.
Jessi: It mostly stays the same. Simply replace the phrase for my father. Say It's my mother's.

Jessi: Okay. Now it's time for a quiz. Imagine that you are visiting France and someone asks you whose something belongs to. You want to say “it’s mine”. Respond to the question.
Ingrid: À qui c'est? (five seconds) C'est à moi.
Jessi: Now, you want to say it's my friend’s. Respond to the question.
Ingrid: À qui c'est? (five seconds) C'est à mon ami.
Jessi: Now, you want to say It's my father's. Answer the speaker's question.
Ingrid: À qui c'est? (five seconds) C'est à mon père.
Jessi: Now, you want to say It's my mother's. Respond to the question.
Ingrid: À qui c'est? (five seconds) C'est à ma mère.
Jessi: Imagine that you find something, and you want to know who it belongs to. Ask the question
