Did you notice how the last speaker says the number of sons? |
Fleur Toussaint: C'est mon mari, mes deux fils et moi. |
Fleur Toussaint: This is my husband, my two sons, and me. |
Mes deux fils, "my two sons." Mes deux fils. |
Let's start with fils, "sons," in this case. Fils. |
Earlier in the lesson, fils translated as "son." In this case, fils translates as "sons," as there are two sons, deux fils. |
Note: The pronunciation and spelling of fils is the same whether it is plural or singular. |
Here, fils is mascuiline and plural — a fact that determines the form of other words in the sentence. |
Before this is deux, "two." Deux (enunciated). Deux. |
Together, deux fils, " two sons." Deux fils. |
Before this is mes, "my." Mes (enunciated). Mes. |
Mes is masculine and plural to agree with fils. |
Together, mes deux fils, "my two sons." Mes deux fils. |
To say "my two daughters," Mes deux filles. |
"My two daughters." Mes deux filles. |
Filles, "daughters." Filles. |
Filles is the plural form of fille, "daughter." Fille. |
Note: The pronunciation of the singular and the plural is the same. |
You should be aware of the plural form, but we'll use singular nouns in this lesson. |
