Hi everyone! I’m Alisha.
Welcome to Conversational Phrases!
We’ve found that the best way to learn a language is to speak it from day one! And the best way to start speaking is to learn phrases that you’ll use in real conversations.
Today, we’ll learn conversational phrases about occupations. After watching this video, you’ll be able to talk about your job and ask what somebody does for a living.
Now, let’s take a look at some conversational phrases!
Listen to the dialogue:
Que faites-vous dans la vie ?
Je suis artiste.
Listen to it again. Now, with the English translation:
Que faites-vous dans la vie ?
“What do you do?”
Je suis artiste.
“I’m an artist.”
First of all, you need to learn how to say “What do you do?”
That's: Que faites-vous dans la vie ?
Listen to it again: Que faites-vous dans la vie ?, Que faites-vous dans la vie ?
This French sentence literally translates into “What are you doing in life?,” but it means “What do you do?” in English.
Now, how do you answer this question?
This is the pattern you’ll need:
Je suis [your occupation].
“I’m a/an [your occupation].”
For example:
“I’m an artist.”
Je suis artiste., Je suis artiste.

Belle journee, Marion,

Merci beaucoup pour l'information❤️

It took me a while to "get the hang of" how to proceed among the lesson pathways😆

(Eventually I figured it out :) However, I do enjoy skipping around just a little bit now & then, rather like taking a little sight-seeing excursion 😉

I have found that I also like to study the same subject matter in the Classic Mode *and* in the other mode, as sometimes the emphasis will be a little bit different in each, and I enjoy the exposure to the different approaches. My favorite interest is in learning basic, very correct, standard French (rather than the slang), because that is how I was originally introduced to French when I was studying it in high school in Virginia in 1970/1971, so that form of the language feels more comfortable.

Bonjour Shelley,

Both forms are correct. "Je suis artiste" would mean that you're an artist professionally meanwhile "je suis un artiste" means that you have the soul of an artist. 😉

Belle journée,

Bonjour a vous!

J'ai un question:

Pourquoi est-ce que, dans le video,

on dit, "Je suis artiste,"

mais dans le dialogue ⬆️

on dit, "Je suis **un** artiste"?

Est-ce que c'est un raisin pour ca?

Est-ce que il y a une differance

entre la phrase avec le mot "un"

et la phrase sans le mot "un" ?

Pouvez-vous expliquer la difference?

Je suis artiste.

Je suis un artiste.

Merci.

Hi Rovana,

Thanks for your message. In French, "dans" and "sur" are both prepositions, however, they are used in different contexts to indicate location or position.

Dans:

"Dans" indicate that something is located inside a space, a place.

Example: "Mon ami est dans le restaurant." (My friend is inside the restaurant.)

Sur:

"Sur" indicate that something is located on top of something else (another object mainly).

Example: "Le sac est sur la table" (The bag is on the table.)

To summarize, ''dans'' is to emphasize on the fact that something or someone is inside a place, meanwhile, ''sur'' is used when you want to translate ''on'' or ''on top of something''.

Sincerely,

Jonathan
