INTRODUCTION |
Eric: Hi everyone, I'm Eric. |
Yasmine: And I'm Yasmine. |
Eric: Talking About Your Profession. |
Eric: In this lesson, you'll learn how to use a sentence pattern for talking about your profession. |
PATTERN |
Eric: For example, "I am a journalist." |
Yasmine: Je suis journaliste. |
Yasmine: [slow] Je suis journaliste. |
Eric: The pattern for talking about your profession has 3 elements. First, a pronoun, in this case "I." |
Yasmine: Je. |
Eric: Second, the verb "to be," conjugated in the first person singular. |
Yasmine: suis. |
Eric: Third, your profession, in this case "journalist." This word can be used with both genders. |
Yasmine: journaliste. |
Eric: Altogether, we have "I am a journalist." |
Yasmine: Je suis journaliste. [slow] Je suis journaliste. [normal] Je suis journaliste. |
Eric: Again, first you have the pronoun, then the verb "to be" conjugated according to the pronoun. And lastly we have the noun, which has to agree with the gender and number. Unlike in English, when you talk about profession in French, it's "I am" directly followed by the profession. There isn’t an article between the verb and the noun. |
Yasmine: Je suis journaliste. |
Eric: So remember, to state your profession, just say "I," plus the verb "to be," plus the profession. Be aware of the speaker's gender. |
Eric: Here’s another example meaning, "I am a dentist." First, a pronoun, in this case "I." |
Yasmine: Je. |
Eric: Second, the verb "to be," conjugated in the first person singular. |
Yasmine: suis. |
Eric: Third, your profession, in this case "dentist." Again, it can be used with both genders. |
Yasmine: dentiste. |
Eric: Altogether we have... |
Yasmine: Je suis dentiste. [slow] Je suis dentiste. [normal] Je suis dentiste. |
Eric: "I am a dentist." |
[pause] |
Yasmine: Je suis dentiste. |
Eric: How do you say - "I am a computer engineer." To give you a hint, "computer engineer" is... |
Yasmine: informaticien. [slow] informaticien. [normal] informaticien. |
Eric: "I am a computer engineer." |
[pause] |
Yasmine: Je suis informaticien. [slow] Je suis informaticien. [normal] Je suis informaticien. |
[pause] |
Yasmine: Je suis informaticien. |
