INTRODUCTION |
Eric: Hi everyone, I'm Eric. |
Yasmine: And I'm Yasmine. |
Eric: Giving Advice, Part 1. |
Eric: In this lesson, you'll learn how to use a sentence pattern for giving advice. |
PATTERN |
Eric: For example, "You should go to the dentist." |
Yasmine: Tu devrais aller chez le dentiste. |
Yasmine: [slow] Tu devrais aller chez le dentiste. |
Eric: The pattern for giving advice has 3 elements. First, the expression "you should" (informal you). |
Yasmine: Tu devrais. |
Eric: Second, a verb in the infinitive form, in this case "to go." |
Yasmine: aller. |
Eric: Third, the complement, in this case "to the dentist." |
Yasmine: chez le dentiste. |
Eric: Altogether, we have "You should go to the dentist." |
Yasmine: Tu devrais aller chez le dentiste. [slow] Tu devrais aller chez le dentiste. [normal] Tu devrais aller chez le dentiste. |
Eric: First you have the expression "you should," then a verb in the infinitive form followed by a complement. |
Yasmine: Tu devrais aller chez le dentiste. |
Eric: So remember, to give advice, start with the expression "you should," followed by a verb in the infinitive form, and then the thing you advise to do. |
Eric: Here's another example meaning, "You should go to sleep earlier." First, the expression "you should" (informal you). |
Yasmine: Tu devrais. |
Eric: Second, a verb in the infinitive form, in this case the reflexive verb, meaning "to sleep." |
Yasmine: te coucher. |
Eric: Third, complement, in this case "earlier." |
Yasmine: plus tôt. |
Eric: Altogether we have... |
Yasmine: Tu devrais te coucher plus tôt. [slow] Tu devrais te coucher plus tôt. [normal] Tu devrais te coucher plus tôt. |
Eric: "You should go to sleep earlier." |
[pause] |
Yasmine: Tu devrais te coucher plus tôt. |
Eric: How do you say - "You should clean your bedroom." To give you a hint, "to clean your bedroom" is... |
Yasmine: ranger ta chambre. [slow] ranger ta chambre. [normal] ranger ta chambre. |
Eric: "You should clean your bedroom." |
[pause] |
Yasmine: Tu devrais ranger ta chambre. [slow] Tu devrais ranger ta chambre. [normal] Tu devrais ranger ta chambre. |
[pause] |
Yasmine: Tu devrais ranger ta chambre. |
