INTRODUCTION |
Eric: Hi everyone, I'm Eric. |
Yasmine: And I'm Yasmine. |
Eric: Expressing What You Want. |
Eric: In this lesson, you'll learn how to use a sentence pattern for expressing what you want. |
PATTERN |
Eric: For example, "I want a book for Christmas." |
Yasmine: Je veux un livre à Noël. |
Yasmine: [slow] Je veux un livre à Noël. |
Eric: The pattern for expressing what you want has 3 elements. First, a pronoun, in this case "I." |
Yasmine: Je. |
Eric: Second, the verb "to want," conjugated in the first person singular. |
Yasmine: veux. |
Eric: Third, a complement, in this case a noun phrase meaning "a book for Christmas." |
Yasmine: un livre à Noël. |
Eric: Altogether, we have "I want a book for Christmas." |
Yasmine: Je veux un livre à Noël. [slow] Je veux un livre à Noël. [normal] Je veux un livre à Noël. |
Eric: First you have the pronoun, then the verb "to want" conjugated according to the pronoun. Lastly, the complement expressing what it is you want. In the case of a noun, an article is needed before it and also after the verb. The article is modified according to the gender and number of the noun. In case of a verb, it should be in the infinitive form. |
Yasmine: Je veux un livre à Noël. |
Eric: So remember, to express you want something, say "I," plus the verb "to want," plus the complement. Be aware of the number and gender in case of a noun. |
Eric: Here’s another example meaning, "I want to win this contest." First, a pronoun, in this case "I." |
Yasmine: Je. |
Eric: Second, the verb "to want," conjugated in the first person singular. |
Yasmine: veux. |
Eric: Third, a complement, in this case a verb phrase meaning "to win this contest." |
Yasmine: gagner ce concours. |
Eric: Altogether we have... |
Yasmine: Je veux gagner ce concours. [slow] Je veux gagner ce concours. [normal] Je veux gagner ce concours. |
Eric: "I want to win this contest." |
[pause] |
Yasmine: Je veux gagner ce concours. |
Eric: How do you say - "I want to go on vacation." To give you a hint, "to go on holiday" is... |
Yasmine: partir en vacances. [slow] partir en vacances. [normal] partir en vacances. |
Eric: "I want to go on vacation." |
[pause] |
Yasmine: Je veux partir en vacances. [slow] Je veux partir en vacances. [normal] Je veux partir en vacances. |
