INTRODUCTION |
Eric: Hi everyone, I'm Eric. |
Yasmine: And I'm Yasmine. |
Eric: Tag Questions. |
Eric: In this lesson, you'll learn how to use a sentence pattern for seeking confirmation about a statement. |
PATTERN |
Eric: For example, "This is cute, isn't it?" |
Yasmine: C'est mignon, n'est-ce pas? |
Yasmine: [slow] C'est mignon, n'est-ce pas? |
Eric: The pattern for seeking confirmation about a statement has 2 elements. First a sentence, in this case "this is cute." |
Yasmine: C'est mignon. |
Eric: Second, the question tag "isn't it?" |
Yasmine: n'est-ce pas. |
Eric: Altogether, we have "This is cute, isn't it?" |
Yasmine: C'est mignon, n'est-ce pas? [slow] C'est mignon, n'est-ce pas? [normal] C'est mignon, n'est-ce pas? |
Eric: First you start with a sentence, and then you add "isn't it" at the end. |
Yasmine: C'est mignon, n'est-ce pas? |
Eric: So remember, to ask for confirmation about a statement, just ask "isn't it" after your sentence. |
Eric: Here's another example meaning, "It's a small world, isn't it?" First a sentence, in this case "it's a small world" or, literally, "the world is small." |
Yasmine: Le monde est petit. |
Eric: Second, the question tag "isn't it." |
Yasmine: n'est-ce pas. |
Eric: Altogether we have... |
Yasmine: Le monde est petit, n'est-ce pas? [slow] Le monde est petit, n'est-ce pas? [normal] Le monde est petit, n'est-ce pas? |
Eric: "It's a small world, isn't it?" |
[pause] |
Yasmine: Le monde est petit, n'est-ce pas? |
Eric: How do you say - "You like spinach, right?" To give you a hint, "to like spinach" is... |
Yasmine: aimer les épinards. [slow] aimer les épinards. [normal] aimer les épinards. |
Eric: "You like spinach, right?" |
[pause] |
