Hi, everybody! This is Yafa from FrenchPod101.com. |
Do you know how to say “thank you” in French? In this lesson, you'll learn three different ways to say "thank you" and how to respond. |
Let’s start with the easiest one. |
Merci. |
[slowly] Merci. |
It means “thank you.” |
If you want to show you really appreciate something, you should use the following phrase. |
Merci beaucoup. |
[slowly] Merci beaucoup. |
You just need to add beaucoup at the end. It means “thank you so much.” |
The word beaucoup means "a lot." When you want to express gratitude more politely, make sure to use beaucoup. |
To sound like a pro, you can also add why you're thankful. For example, Merci beaucoup de votre aide. |
“Thank you very much for your help.” |
What if you want to show appreciation for something in a more formal way? Here's how you can say it. |
Je vous remercie. |
[slowly] Je vous remercie. |
Je is "I," and vous is the formal word for "you." Remercie means “give thanks.” So it literally means "I give thanks to you." Je vous remercie. |
Now you know 3 different ways to say "thank you" in French! But how do you respond if someone thanks you? |
If someone says "thank you" in French, simply say De rien. It means "it's nothing." If it's in a formal situation, say Je vous en prie. |
Let's wrap up this lesson by recapping what we've learned. Listen to the expressions and repeat after me. |
“Thank you." |
