INTRODUCTION
Sam: Smoking Fire. My name is Sam, and I’m joined here by…
Sylvain: Sylvain
Sam: and…
Celine: Celine! Bienvenue à FrenchPod101.com. Hé Sylvain, tu es de la partie !
Sylvain: Oui, bonjour.
Sam: Sylvain, you're in!
Sylvain: Yeah!
Sam: Welcome back!
Sylvain: Oui, I didn’t want to miss this first lesson of Idioms and Proverbs. Je suis tout excité, commençons !
Sam: Are you excited? You want to start right away?
Sam: Oui.
Celine: Il a le feu aux fesses, “He has fire on the buttocks.”
Sam: What did you say?
Celine: It’s a French expression meaning he’s in a hurry. Anyway, talking about fire, what’s today’s topic?
Sam: Today, it’s about a proverb, right?
Sylvain: Oui, yes. But we are not going to tell you and first, let’s listen to the conversation and try to find today’s proverb. Are you ready? Oui, are you ready?
Celine: Oui. Sam, oui !
Sam: I’m ready.
Sylvain: Let’s go!
Sam: Yes, let’s go.
Celine: Before we start, this conversation takes place in a cafe, between two friends. C’est parti.
Sam and Sylvain: Let’s go!
DIALOGUES
A: Hé Thomas, tu as entendu la nouvelle ?
B: Non ?
Sam: Now, one time slowly.
A: Hé Thomas, tu as entendu la nouvelle ?
B: Non ?
Sam: Now, one time with the English.
A: Hé Thomas, tu as entendu la nouvelle ?
A: Hey Thomas, have you heard the news?
B: Non ?
B: No?
A: It is said that Sophie has another boyfriend! Do you think it’s true?
B: Je ne sais pas mais en tout cas. Il n'y a pas de fumée sans feu !
B: I don't know but in any case, there’s no smoke without fire.
POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Celine: Oh oh, c’est pas bien ça, it’s no good!
Sam: At least for once, it’s about a girl.
Sylvain: Ouais. So Sam, did you guess today’s proverb?
Sam: Well, something about smoking fire.
Celine: Oui, smoking fire. And today’s proverb is…
Sylvain: Il n'y a pas de fumée sans feu. Il n'y a pas de fumée sans feu.
Sam: "There's no smoke without fire."
Celine: Yes. This proverb is widely used in France. It is to talk about gossips, latest news. The meaning is gossips are sometimes the truth and that at the origins of rumors, there’s something true. What do you think Sylvain, Sam?
Sam: I don’t think it’s wrong either. How do you say “gossip” in French?
Celine: Ragots, cancans, commérages.
Sylvain: You know, French people like to gossip a lot, especially in small village or in your neighborhood. If you go to the bakery, you will hear some gossip about the dentist or the butcher.
Sam: Oh really? That sounds funny.
Celine: If you’re not the protagonist of the gossip, it’s funny.
Sam: Exactly. Well, how do you spread gossip?
Celine: Why? What kind of gossip do you wanna spread? Any gossip about me?
Sam: It’s not always about you, Mademoiselle Celine. Ah, French woman!
Sylvain: Well, Sam, to spread a gossip, here is a tip. For example, we have a fact: Celine a embrassé Kristoff sur la bouche.
Sam: “Celine kissed Kristoff on the lips.”
Sylvain: Je l’ai vu !
Celine: N’importe quoi.
Sylvain: Je l’ai vu. I saw it.
Celine: Nonsense! N’importe quoi.
Sylvain: To spread magnificent gossip, you should add “il paraît que”.
Sam: “It seems that”
Sam: “It seems that Celine kissed Kristoff on the lips.”
Celine: Oh super exemple, hein ! C’est vraiment nul. It’s a very bad example. It’s lousy, guys.
Sam: “Dear Celine, there’s no smoke without fire.”
Sylvain: Hahaha.
Sam: Well done, Sylvain.

Outro

Sam: This is the end of today’s lesson. And remember guys, we have the slow version and the English in the premium learning center.
Sylvain: And now, I have to take the responsibility of this horrible gossip that is absolutely false and don’t hit me, Celine, please.
Celine: Non, non, okay.
Sam: I’m sure it will be okay, guys.
Sylvain: Protect me, Sam! Protect me!
Celine: No way! You’ll pay for that.
Sylvain: Aahhh!
Sam: Until the next time!
Celine: Au revoir, Sam.
Sylvain: Ooooh!
Sam: Au revoir mes amis.
