Jessi: What are you doing? in French
Jessi: In each lesson of this 25 part series, you'll master a common question for French learners, and then learn how to answer it like a native. You'll learn how these key phrases work by breaking them down into each component. Then through repetition and new vocabulary, you'll expand your understanding of the question, its answers, and any variations. You'll also improve pronunciation and fluency by repeating the words and phrases out loud after hearing them.
Jessi: In this lesson, you'll learn how to respond to the common question "What are you doing?" In French, this is
Ingrid: Que faites-vous?
The first word in the question “What are you doing?” is
Ingrid: Que
Jessi: meaning “What" in English. Listen to it syllable by syllable.
Ingrid: (Slow, by syllable) Que
Jessi: Listen again at natural speed. Please repeat.
Ingrid: Que
Jessi: This pattern of first introducing a word at natural speed, providing the English translation, breaking it down by syllable, and then giving it once more at natural speed will be repeated throughout the series. Try to speak aloud as often as possible. The next word in the question, What are you doing? is
Ingrid: faites
Jessi: meaning do in English. Listen to it syllable by syllable.

Jessi: meaning I. Listen to it syllable by syllable.
Ingrid: (Slow, by syllable) Je
Jessi: Again at natural speed. Repeat.
Ingrid: Je
Jessi: And after that
Ingrid: réfléchis
meaning think. Listen to it syllable by syllable.
Ingrid: (Slow, by syllable) réfléchis
Jessi: Again at natural speed. Repeat.
Ingrid: réfléchis
Jessi: Listen to the speaker say, I'm just thinking., and then repeat.
Ingrid: Je réfléchis.
Jessi: To expand on the pattern, replace thinking with singing.
Ingrid: chante
Jessi: singing
Ingrid: (slow) chante (regular) chante
Jessi: Listen to the phrase again, this time with singing
Ingrid: Je chante.
Jessi: It mostly stays the same. Simply replace thinking. Say I'm just singing.
Ingrid: Je chante.
Jessi: To use a different phrase, replace singing with doing homework.

Jessi: To use a different phrase, replace doing homework with watch television.

Jessi: It mostly stays the same. Simply replace the word for doing homework. Say I'm just watch television.

Now it's time for a quiz. Imagine you are visiting France and a stranger asks you what you're doing. You are thinking. Respond to the question.
Ingrid: Que faites-vous? (five seconds) Je réfléchis.
Jessi: Now imagine you are singing Respond to the question.
Ingrid: Que faites-vous? (five seconds) Je chante.
Jessi: Imagine you are doing homework. . Answer the speaker's question.
Ingrid: Que faites-vous? (five seconds) Je fais mes devoirs.
Jessi: Imagine you're watch television. Respond to the question.
Ingrid: Que faites-vous? (five seconds) Je regarde la télévision.
Jessi: You want to know what the stranger is doing. Ask the question
