INTRODUCTION |
Gabriella: Salut chers auditeurs ! Je m'appelle Gabriella. A Lucky French Fashion Lover! |
Jeremy: Moi, c'est Jeremy. |
Gabriella: Let's get started. Quel est le sujet de la leçon d'aujourd'hui ? |
Jeremy: In this lesson, you’ll learn how to express probabilities. |
Gabriella: This conversation is between Charlène and Laure, who are friends. |
Jeremy: C’est donc une conversation familière. |
DIALOGUE |
Laure : Hey Charlène, tu devineras jamais ! |
Charlène : Quoi donc ? Tu as sans doute trouvé les bottes de tes rêves ? |
Laure : Ah, pas loin ! Mais ce n'est pas ça ! |
Charlène : Peut-être que tu as trouvé des places pour ce défilé de mode dont tu m'as beaucoup parlé ? |
Laure : Oui, c'est ça ! C'est probablement le plus beau coup de chance de ma vie ! Si tu as le temps, tu peux venir avec moi ! |
Charlène : Ok, pas de problème, mais je vais vérifier mon agenda, au cas où j'ai déjà un rendez-vous.... C'est bon, je suis libre ! |
Gabriella: Now let's hear it with the English translation. |
Laure : Hey Charlène, tu devineras jamais ! |
Laure : Hey Charlène! You're never gonna guess! |
Charlène : Quoi donc ? Tu as sans doute trouvé les bottes de tes rêves ? |
Charlène : Well, what? You've probably found your dream boots. |
Laure : Ah, pas loin ! Mais ce n'est pas ça ! |
Laure : Not yet, but that's not it. |
Charlène : Peut-être que tu as trouvé des places pour ce défilé de mode dont tu m'as beaucoup parlé ? |
Charlène : Maybe you've managed to get tickets for the fashion show you told me a lot about? |
Laure : Oui, c'est ça ! C'est probablement le plus beau coup de chance de ma vie ! Si tu as le temps, tu peux venir avec moi ! |
Laure : Exactly! That's probably the best stroke of luck in my whole life! If you have time, come with me! |
Charlène : Ok, pas de problème, mais je vais vérifier mon agenda, au cas où j'ai déjà un rendez-vous.... C'est bon, je suis libre ! |
Charlène : Ok, no problem, but I have to check my schedule, just in case I have an appointment...It's ok, I'm free! |
POST CONVERSATION BANTER |
Gabriella: Charlène is really lucky! |
Jeremy: Yes, she is, it’s never easy to get tickets for a fashion show. You’re supposed to know someone already invited for that! |
Gabriella: And France is known for fashion, there must be a lot of fashion shows and so a lot of fashion designers. |
Jeremy: Oui, beaucoup sont connus, Christian Dior, Chanel, Vuitton… Mais il y en a d’autres! |
Gabriella: I’ve heard about Madeleine Vionnet. |
Jeremy: She's known because she created a lot of dresses in a very personal way, and they're really beautiful! |
Gabriella: But she was born in the 19th century. What about the latest famous designers? |
Jeremy: I can talk a little about Franck Sorbier, for example. He used to work with Cartier and for many artists, such as Mylène Farmer, a singer. |
Gabriella: J’irais voir ses collections sur Internet! |

KEY VOCAB AND PHRASES |
Gabriella Let's have a closer look at the usage for some of the words and phrases from this lesson. Jeremy, what’s our first word? |
Jeremy: Coup de chance |
Gabriella: “Stroke of luck”. Literally, it means “hit of luck”. |
Jeremy: Oui, et c’est positif! Ca veut dire qu’on a de la chance. |
Gabriella: There are a lot of expressions for talking about luck in French! |
Jeremy: You can say avoir du bol, literally, "to have a bowl." |
Gabriella: (laughs), that’s strange! |
Jeremy: Oui, on peut dire aussi "avoir de la veine”, but it’s less used. |
Gabriella: I see. And what if you’re unlucky? |
Jeremy: I hope not! Mais si jamais cela arrive, on peut dire “je n’ai pas de chance”. |
Gabriella: “I’m unlucky”. Or Le sort s’acharne sur moi |
Jeremy: "Fate is merciless to me." Yes, but this one is a bit formal. |
Gabriella: Ok, I think I get it! What’s our next word? |
Jeremy: défilé. It’s used in three contexts... un défilé de mode |
Gabriella: "a fashion show" |
Jeremy: un défilé militaire ou de Carnaval |
Gabriella: "a military parade" or simply "a parade." |
Jeremy: You can also use it for ants! |
Gabriella: Beurk! Ok! Let’s talk about dream stuff! |
Jeremy: L’expression ‘“de mes rêves” is quite common. |
Gabriella: “...of my dreams”. |
Jeremy: It’s formed by De + possessive pronoun (plural only) + rêves. For example... C’est la maison de vos rêves ! |
Gabriella: "It’s your dream house!" |
Jeremy: You just have to adapt the pronoun! |
Gabriella: c’est simple! Okay, now onto the grammar. |
GRAMMAR POINT |
Gabriella: In this lesson, you’ll learn about the expression of probability. |
Jeremy: Oui, avec les mots “peut-être”... |
Gabriella: “maybe”... |
Jeremy: Sans doute... |
Gabriella: “without a doubt”... |
Jeremy: “probablement”... |
Gabriella: “Probably”. There are many others too. |
Jeremy: Oui, such as sûrement, meaning “most likely”. |
Gabriella: D’accord, mais certains n’expriment pas l’hypothèse… “sans doute” |
Jeremy: The meaning of this one is closer to “probably”. For example... Elle doit sans doute être déjà rentré chez elle. |
Gabriella: "She’s probably already home." |
Jeremy: This means that the speaker is almost totally sure she’s home, but without any evidence. |
Gabriella: Ok, je m’en souviendrai! |
Jeremy: These words are directly followed by the verb. |
Gabriella: Let’s hear some examples. Imagine you are attending a party and you would like to call a friend but it’s late, so she might be sleeping already. |
Jeremy: You can ask - Tu crois qu’elle dort déjà ? And your friend could answer - Probablement |
Gabriella: “Do you think she’s already asleep?” - “Probably.” |
Jeremy: Peut-être que tu as trouvé des places pour ce défilé de mode dont tu m’as beaucoup parlé ? |
Gabriella: "Maybe you’ve managed to get tickets for the fashion show you told me a lot about?" |
Jeremy: Another one - Je vais sûrement faire des travaux de rénovation dans la maison. |
Gabriella: "I’ll very probably do some renovation work in my house." |
Jeremy: You can express any probability with these four words, and as we saw, it’s not necessary in a sentence! |
Gabriella: En effet, si on pose une question, on peut répondre “Peut-être” |
Jeremy: “Maybe” or “might be”, since French does not make a difference between these expressions. |
Gabriella: Ok, j’ai bien compris! |
Jeremy: Il suffit de s’entraîner un peu! |
Gabriella: Donc, n’hésitez pas à pratiquer dans les commentaires! |
Jeremy: Bonne chance, et à la prochaine! |
Outro
|
Jeremy: Okay, that’s all for this lesson. |
Gabriella: Thank you for listening everyone, and we’ll see you next time. |
Jeremy: Salut! |
